A pedestrian died in a train accident in Dixon, California, on Wednesday morning, September 16th. The Solano County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Gadriela Ahumada, 42, a city resident.
The accident report showed that the train-pedestrian collision happened near the 400-block of Porter Road at about 7 a.m. The sheriff’s office did not state how the incident occurred, but they revealed that Ahumada died at the scene. An investigation into the occurrence is ongoing.
Unsafe railroad crossings present a danger to pedestrians as do motor vehicles. Unguarded and poorly maintained crossings are a common cause of this type of accident.
Crossing outside a designated area is also a contributor, as well as negligence of both pedestrians and railroad authorities. Crossing a train track is viewed as trespassing as most railroads are private properties, and the Federal Railroad Administration sees pedestrians walking on train tracks as trespassers.
Trespassing pedestrians are liable to pay a fine, and it also serves as a deterrent to keep people away from train tracks and prevents accidents. Other preventive measures are looking for warning signs and signals, and moving across the rail as fast as possible.
An average freight train cannot stop fast enough; thus, use only designated crossing areas and always look both ways before crossing. Be aware that some vehicles tend to stall on train railroads, and stay out of their way.
Don’t walk along train tracks, and avoid jaywalking. If warning signs are not working, file a report at the relevant authority and avoid crossing in that area.
