Robert Cooks Dies in Grapevine Vehicle Accident

The man killed in a traffic accident in the unincorporated Grapevine area of California has been identified as Robert Lee Cooks Jr., 27, of Los Angeles. The Kern County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identification on Monday, September 21st.

The coroner’s office will perform a post mortem exam to determine the cause and manner of death. Facts from the car accident report showed that the crash took place on the morning of Monday, September 14th.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said that Cooks crashed while trying to evade police on Interstate 5 at Laval Road. At about 7 a.m., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Mercedes operated by the victim for speeding near the Grapevine Road off-ramp.

The police said that rather than stopping, the man took off and lost control of the car shortly after. The vehicle rolled several times, and the impact ejected Cooks onto the roadway. He sustained significant injuries and died at the scene.

The KCSO said that the man was the only occupant of the Mercedes, and there was no other vehicle involved. The crash led to the California Highway Patrol shutting down the affected roadway. There is no additional information.

When a car accident occurs, those inside will remain stationary if they have their seatbelts on. Lack of seatbelt use causes the ejection of the occupants of a motor vehicle. Thus, drivers and passengers must use the strap when in transit for their safety and to prevent adverse legal consequences.
