On Thursday morning, October 8th, Jack Swarts, 62, survived his car crashing into a canal in south Modesto, California. The accident report showed that a passerby identified as Steve Montelego, 80, found the victim’s car in the irrigation canal at Hatch and Crows Landing Road.
The samaritan said the car was partially submerged in the canal, with the victim inside. Swarts was trying to get out of the vehicle as water filled the interior. The California Highway Patrol said Montelego, with the help of other passersby, grabbed hold of the man’s shirt.
A woman took the older man’s hand, and together, they pulled the victim out of the vehicle. Swarts allegedly blacked out while driving. CHP spokesman Officer Thomas Olsen said the preliminary investigation showed that at about 10 a.m., the man operated a 2016 Dodge sedan west on Hatch.
Olsen said that the victim might have suffered a medical incident, causing him to crash into the canal about 100 feet west of Crows Landing. The man was uninjured in the accident, and medics took him to Doctors Medical Center to treat the apparent medical condition.
An underlying medical condition is one of the causes of motor vehicle accidents, although it is not common. Illnesses like a heart condition, diabetic Miletus, and epilepsy fall under this head. Drivers with any of the preceding should take extra precaution when on the road, and if possible, use alternative transportation to avoid collisions.
