Alona Prescott Identified as Victim of Long Beach Pedestrian Accident

The woman who died a week after she was involved in an accident in Long Beach, California, has been identified. On Wednesday, August 19th, the Long Beach Police Department revealed her identity as Alona Prescott, a 22-year-old city resident.

The accident report placed the time of the occurrence at about 5:40 a.m. on Friday, August 7th. The police said that Prescott was attempting to cross the street outside a crosswalk when a Honda Civic heading west on Anaheim Street struck her.

The woman suffered significant injuries, and medics rushed her to a hospital where she remained until she passed away on Friday, August 14th. The LBPD said that the driver of the Honda remained at the scene and cooperated with them.

The investigators did not suspect the influence of alcohol or drugs in the occurrence. They closed down Anaheim Street at Oregon Avenue while they cleared the collision site. The investigation remains active.

Auto-pedestrian collisions are not uncommon on California roadways, and it is a problem that is going from bad to worse. While liability in this type of accident often lies with the driver of a vehicle, the pedestrian also shares part of the blame in most cases.

To this end, drivers and pedestrians must work together to reduce the state’s crash and fatality rate by promoting safe road behaviors. Pedestrians should cross within designated crosswalks and stick to curbs and sidewalks, while drivers should yield the right of way to them, and stop at crosswalks.
