The pedestrian who was killed last week in a hit-and-run crash during a street race in South Los Angeles, California, has been identified. Accident reports released by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office on Saturday, May 2, disclosed the fatal victim’s identity as 56-year-old Andre Smith.

The fatal crash was reported at about 4 am on Friday, May 1, in the area of 97th Street and Western Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. When officers arrived at the scene of the accident, they found a pedestrian sprawled on the roadway.

Investigators determined that the crash began when two motorists were engaged in a street race on the northbound travel lanes of Western.

Just as the unlawful racers approached 92nd, one of the vehicles ran over a pedestrian, who was at the time walking westbound across Western. The man suffered fatal injuries as a result.

LAPD reports confirmed that neither of the motorists stopped to render assistance to the struck pedestrian, but fled the scene of the accident after hitting Andre Smith.

Paramedics accompanying the responding LAPD officers confirmed the injured man dead at the scene shortly after their arrival.

No information about the motorists, or the description of the involved vehicles was immediately released in the accident reports.

Witnesses with helpful information that could help facilitate police investigation and bring the culprits to book were urged to contact the LAPD.
