Hosea and Mercedes Askew Arrested After Berkeley Crash, Death of Motorist

At least two people have been arrested for allegedly shooting a motorist, causing his vehicle to swerve out of control and crash into another car, which was parked on the street corner in Berkeley, California. Officers of the Berkeley Police Department apprehended the suspects on Saturday, March 21, barely 24 hours after the fatality was recorded.

According to Chestnut Street residents, the sound of a crash was heard throughout the vicinity just after noon on Friday, March 20.

Neighbors poured out to determine the source of the crash, and found two vehicles involved in an accident, with one, a dark blue SUV slammed into a parked car from behind. The driver of the SUV appeared unconscious as he was slumped over the steering wheel.

Other neighbours confirmed sighting a third vehicle speeding away from the scene immediately after the crash, which made them conclude it was a case of a hit-and-run.

Upon closer investigation, the residents discovered that the victim of the crash was shot prior to the collision. The motorist’s 20-year-old sister was reportedly present in the car when the incident took place.

Emergency responders pronounced the victim dead, while the other occupant who was covered in her brother’s blood, was unharmed.

Authorities launched an investigation into the tragic occurrence to apprehend the culprits, and evidence pointed to two Berkely residents, Hosea Askew, 52 and Mercedes Askew, 62.

Hosea, suspected to be the shooter, was arrested on charges on murder, while Mercedes was held as an alleged accessory to the murder, and released on a $20,000 bail.

Both suspects are slated to appear in court on Tuesday, March 24, for arraignment.
