The coroner’s office of the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles, California, on Thursday, February 27th, identified the woman found on the road after a hit-and-run accident in Sylmar. She is 80-year-old, Celia Rivera.
The deceased lost her life after an unknown driver struck her down at about 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26th. The accident happened near the intersection of Hubbard Street and Dronfield Avenue.
Rivera was trying to cross the street when the unknown driver hit her. The LAPD stated that the vehicle is possibly a white Ford Mustang, and the driver drove off without a second thought to the older woman.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Rivera unresponsive and pronounced her dead. LAPD set up a tent where the woman’s body was found off the sidewalk on the southeast side of the street, a few feet south of the intersection with Dronfield.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. The police have asked anyone with relevant information who has not been interviewed to contact the LAPD.
A hit-and-run is a severe traffic offense in California, and courts take it seriously. It is generally considered a wobbler under the vehicle laws of the state, and offenders either get charged with a misdemeanor or felony.
The circumstances of each case are considered before the courts can arrive at a decision. A misdemeanor hit-and-run carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail, while a felony carries a maximum of four years and a fine not less than $10 000.
