Authorities have disclosed the identity of the aircraft pilot who died last weekend after his plane crashed a few seconds before landing in Byron, California. The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office, in the updated accident reports released on Tuesday, May 12, disclosed the fatal victim’s identity as John Scott, a 68-year-old resident of Concord.
According to the East Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, the plane crashed at precisely 1:20 p.m., on Saturday, May 9, at Byron Airport. Police said the victim was the sole pilot operating the aircraft at the time.
Investigators gathered that Scott flew his two-seat Bellanca 8GCBC single-engine plane into Byron Airport. He was reportedly preparing to land the aircraft when for unknown reasons, it crashed into the edge of the runway. Officers said the plane was towing a trailing glider at the time. The glider landed safely amid the wreckage.
Meanwhile, Scott suffered fatal injuries in the crash, and first responders confirmed his death at the scene.
Officials said the elderly pilot was on the Board of Directors of the Northern California Soaring Association (NCSA). The body reportedly owned five gliders and a tow plane. The accident reports did not disclose the emergence of any other casualty or destruction of property which may have resulted from the plane crash.
The cause of the tragic crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
