Juan Hernandez IDed as Victim of Costa Mesa Pedestrian Collision

The life of a 49-year-old male pedestrian ended on Tuesday, June 23rd, in an auto-pedestrian accident in the Costa Mesa area of California. On Wednesday, June 24th, the Orange County Coroner’s office revealed the victim’s name as Juan Hernandez.

According to the Costa Mesa Police Department, a pickup truck struck the man and another male pedestrian outside a Home Depot at 2300 Harbor Boulevard. Officers responded to the area just before noon after receiving a call about two pedestrians getting hit near a lumbar area.

The police did not release details about the second man’s identity or the extent of his injuries. The medics took the men to an undisclosed hospital where Hernandez succumbed to his wounds. The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.

Auto-pedestrian accidents are on the rise in California, with more people walking to several places daily. The Cal Office of Traffic Safety sees it as a problem that must get curbed before the numbers increase. One of the ways suggested by the agency is following safety tips and practicing safe road behaviors.

Safety tips for pedestrians include wearing bright colors and carrying a flashlight at night to enlighten visibility, avoiding jaywalking and dangerous road behaviors, staying off the phone, using crosswalks, and looking left-right-left before crossing.

That of drivers includes driving within the legal speed limit, not drinking and driving, looking out for pedestrians, stopping at crosswalks to allow pedestrians to cross, and cautiously backing out of driveways.
