The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, February 24th, identified the man who got hit in the vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident in Sanger, Fresno County, California. He is 71-year-old David Pinedo.
A drunk driver hit the deceased at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, February 21st. Pinedo was crossing the street at Academy and Eight on Friday night when he got knocked down by an SUV.
44-year-old Vivian Lugo drove the car, and she pulled over to help the injured man. The paramedics rushed Pinedo to the Community Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
A vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident often leads to severe injuries. Pedestrians suffer broken bones, blunt force trauma, and brain injury, which leads to fatalities or alters the quality of a person’s life.
Deputies at the scene ran a breathalyzer test and found that the driver was impaired and driving under the influence. Lugo got arrested on DUI charges and is also facing a vehicular manslaughter charge.
Under California Law, a vehicular manslaughter charge and DUI offenses are taken seriously. It gets charged as a felony, and the court takes into consideration the surrounding factors of a case.
The court also considers the conduct of the offender at the time of the accident to reach a verdict. A guilty verdict means not less than four, six, or ten years imprisonment in state jail.
The person also makes restitution to the family of the victim and would have his or her driver’s license suspended for three years. Lugo is currently awaiting her preliminary hearing in the county jail.
