The man who caused a two-vehicle collision in Santa Paula, 48 miles to Glendale, California, on Friday, March 13th, is in custody. Police identified and arrested Demetrio Casimiro, 18, at the scene of the accident.

The preliminary accident report showed that on Friday evening, two vehicles collided at the intersection of 4th Street and Main Street. Casimiro was driving an unnamed vehicle when, at about 7:19 p.m., for unknown reasons, he crashed against another unidentified car.

After the collision, the teenager also crashed into a business on the 320-block of E Main Street. First responders found him in that position when they arrived, and he seemed to have little or no injuries.

A passenger in Casimiro’s vehicle, who remains unidentified, had minor injuries and was taken by paramedics to a local hospital in an ambulance. A field breathalyzer test determined that the young man was under the influence of alcohol.

He was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence causing injury. The accident is under investigation, and witnesses have been asked to contact the Santa Paula police.

Accidents are not uncommon among teenage drivers. Statistics have shown that drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 get into accidents more than any other age group.

The high rate of road crashes among teenagers occurs for different reasons. One of them is getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and driving above the legal speed limit.

Another common cause is distracted driving caused by drivers texting, answering phone calls, and eating. Teenage drivers are advised by authorities to pay rapt attention to the road while driving and do so with a sober mind.
