Discovery Inc. on Tuesday, February 25th, released a statement confirming the death of “Mad” Mike Hughes, 64. He was performing a stunt in his neighborhood of Barstow when things went wrong, and he died.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner’s Office, Hughes died when the rocket he was testing for an upcoming show crashed into an open desert. The accident happened at about 1:52 p.m. on Saturday, February 22nd.
The deceased made a name for himself as a stunt professional, and he is famous for building and testing his rockets. He was planning on launching the rocket to go into the border of space with part of a balloon.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s aviation investigators are leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. So far, they have not uncovered any helpful information but will update the public once they do.
Hughes was working on a series titled “Homemade Astronauts” with Discovery. The stunt he was performing would make up part of the footage for the show, and the science station has been filming the deceased while he built the rocket.
Discovery video crew was also there to film the ill-fated rocket launch, but the station has not stated if they would use the footage of the crash. The homemade rocket was a personal dream of Hughes.
Back in 2018, the deceased successfully launched a rocket from 1, 875 feet in the air from the Mojave Desert. He built the rocket in his garage and softened the deployment with a parachute.
