Doren James Strane Identified as Hiker Killed in Bakersfield Rockslide

Doren James Strane

The identity of a man killed over the weekend in a rockslide while out hiking in the Bakersfield area of California has been disclosed. The Kern County Coroner’s Office, on Tuesday, April 28, identified the deceased man as Doren James Strane, 56, of Paso Robles as divulged in the accident reports.

The fatal incident took place at night on Sunday, April 26, in the foothills near Alfred Harrell Highway, police acknowledged.

Other hikers accompanying the victim placed a 911 call to the police at about 7:45 pm, reporting the rockslide that left at least one hiker trapped underneath the dislodged debris.

As reported, the group was hiking just west of the 10500 block of Alfred Harrekk when the supposed accident happened.

Responding officers found a piece of equipment belonging to the lost hiker amid the debris, which led to the location of the man. However, Doren James Strane was already dead when he was pulled out from the fallen dirt and rocks.

Authorities admitted that the search and rescue operation was initially delayed due to some hindrances encountered, including the nature of the terrain and the lack of lighting. The Bakersfield Fire Department assisted in the recovery of Strane’s body.

The number of hikers involved and their identities were not disclosed to the public. No other information about the rockslide was shared in the accident reports. An investigation into the tragic incident, which has been listed as an accident, is ongoing.
