Pedestrian Killed by Semi-Truck in Emeryville

Shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a female pedestrian was struck and killed by a semi-truck while she was crossing the street in Emeryville. The accident occurred at the intersection of Powell Street and Christie Avenue, an intersection that has been described as one of the most dangerous in the city.

The victim, who has now been identified as 58-year-old Mahin Ashki, was crossing within the southbound crosswalk from northbound Christie Avenue, just as a semi-truck was making a westbound turn onto Powell from southbound Christie Avenue.

Ashki was struck by the right front portion of the semi-truck. The truck driver reported the incident to the police and remained at the scene. According to the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau, Ashki was taken to Highland Hospital where she was then pronounced dead.

A native of Iran and former resident of Lexington Kentucky, Ashki is survived by a husband and two children. She moved to the US in 1976 to attend the University of Louisville, and a decade later found herself under threat of deportation back to Iran for marriage fraud. Fighting to remain in the US, Ashki’s plight gained national attention in 2001 when the Associated Press reported on her story. Ashki moved to California in the mid-2000’s because there was a possibility that the senators would submit bills to Congress that would allow someone in her situation to receive a pardon.

Her former attorney, Ron Russell, of Louisville, Kentucky said Ashki’s death was unfair and unexpected because “she was in a situation where she was able to continue to remain here.”
