Eugene Harbrecht Killed in Alleged Santa Ana Street Racing Accident

In Santa Ana, California, a street race led to the death of an uninvolved driver on Thursday, July 30th. The Santa Ana Police Department identified the victim as Eugene Harbrecht, a 67-year-old city resident, who worked as a news editor with the Orange County Register since 1984.

The car accident report placed the time of the accident before 11:45 a.m. at the intersection of Bristol Street and Santa Clara Avenue. Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said that the driver of a BMW and another vehicle raced each other north on Bristol.

The BMW then slammed into a Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by Harbrecht, as he made a left turn from Santa Clara to southbound Bristol. The impact sent the vehicle skidding 60 to 70 feet into a wall before going up in flames. Bertagna said that two residents rushed out of their homes and pulled the driver from the wreckage while a police officer at the scene put out the fire.

Responding medics rushed Harbrecht to UC Irvine Medical Center, where medical personnel pronounced him dead. The driver of the wrecked BMW sustained unknown degrees of injuries, and medics transported him to an area hospital for treatment. The police tracked down the driver of the other vehicle, a black Infiniti, and arrested him.

The investigators did not release the name of the racing drivers. The inquiry into the collision is ongoing, and there’s no additional information at this time.
