One of the car accident reports update released by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday, July 22nd, disclosed the name of the fatal victim of a solo car crash in Ventura, California. 21-year-old Florencio Calderon, of Compton, died from injuries sustained in the suspected DUI accident.
The crash report released by the California Highway Patrol placed the time of the accident at about 2 a.m. on Saturday, July 18th. It occured on the northbound lane of Highway 101 north of Telephone Pole Road. Calderon traveled as a passenger in a 2007 Mustang driven by 19-year-old Jorge Angel Perez, of Compton.
The preliminary investigation uncovered that the driver, who was driving at top speed, tried to swerve to avoid hitting a slower vehicle near the Highway 126 interchange and lost control. The Mustang went off the roadway, flipped down an embankment, and rested on its roof.
Calderon was not wearing a seatbelt, and the impact of the collision ejected him onto the road. He sustained fatal wounds while Perez suffered minor injuries. Two other teenage passengers in the vehicle sustained moderate injuries, and the medics conveyed them to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment.
The investigators determined that the driver was under the influence and arrested him on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. They booked him into the Ventura County Jail, and later released him on bond. The accident remains under investigation, and anyone with information should contact the Ventura office of the CHP.
