On Thursday, February 13th, a car accident on Lone Pine, Inyo County, claimed one life while leaving one injured. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Highway 395 in the Coso Road Rest area, at about 2 p.m.
The CHP uncovered that Robert Frost, 78, of Arizona, was driving his Nissan Versa on Coso Road when he jumped the intersection without yielding. He collided with a 2014 International semi-truck that was heading north on US 395.
The impact of the crash caused Frost’s car to roll in the center divider. He sustained severe injuries and got flown by first responders to a hospital in Bakersfield.
A passenger in the Nissan, identified only as an 88-year-old woman from Arizona, died instantly at the scene. The driver of the truck, Stiegler Ridgecrest, was unhurt and didn’t need any medical attention.
The CHP has not released any more information on the crash. They are still investigating the cause of the accident, and what could have led Frost to jump his intersection.
Intersection collisions are some of the deadliest and most common traffic accidents in California. It is mostly caused by drivers jumping traffic lights or incorrectly anticipating a stop sign and turning without looking.
Another cause is drivers not stopping entirely at a red light before entering an intersection. Rear-end collisions and left-turn smash-ups also contribute to intersection collisions.
California Vehicle Codes monitor and regulate traffic-related accidents, and violations are considered an act of negligence. Victims of such accidents can bring personal injury suits against the offenders and are entitled to damages.
