A man was killed in downtown Riverside, California, on Sunday morning after a car he was traveling in crashed into a stop sign and a light pole located in Jurupa Avenue. Following the single-vehicle crash which took place on Sunday, March 29, the driver of the crashed vehicle was taken into custody by the Riverside police authorities.

According to the police reports, a 1999 Infiniti G20 operated by a 21 year old local, Harrison Mendoza, was traveling through the east lanes on Jurupa Avenue at about 4:18 am, when he approached a curve at pachappa Drive and attempted an illegal diversion.

As a result of the maneuver, the motorist struck a stop sign on the roadway and swayed into a utility pole, causing injuries to himself and the single passenger in the G20.

Fire department personnel responding at the scene tried to rescue both victims, but the passenger, identified as 35-year-old Dennis Reed of Corona, gave in to his injuries before he was transported to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the vehicle operator suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated by medical personnel. Investigators determined that the motorist was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Harrison Mendoza was arrested on suspicions of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center, pending payment of $75,000 bail. The avenue was shut down for hours until the necessary on-site investigations were completed.
