High-Speed Driver Kills Gilberto Avila in Yucca Valley Pedestrian Accident

On Thursday, March 12th, in Yucca Valley, 49 miles to San Bernardino, California, a high-speed driver ended the life of a man. The California Highway Patrol identified him as Gilberto Avila, 40.

The CHP in its report stated that Avila was standing on the right shoulder of Interstate 10 and Whitewater Road when he got struck. The CHP had been called to the area at about 1:55 p.m. for two separate single-vehicle accidents.

Avila, who was driving a Prius, had little or no injury and was waiting for a tow truck to arrive and take his vehicle away. At about 3 p.m., the tow truck arrived to take the Prius away, and at the same time, a silver Chrysler was coming from the eastbound lane of Tipton Road at high speed.

A man from Arizona drove the Chrysler, and he lost control of the vehicle. The man crossed several lanes of traffic and drove into the right shoulder, where he struck the tow truck and then Avila.

The deceased’s Prius overturned in the crash, and also struck the second vehicle involved in the solo crash. Avila suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

The driver of the Chrysler and the two passengers with him had minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital for treatment. The CHP said while drugs or alcohol do not seem to have played a role, the Arizona native’s speed was way over what was required for the road.

The speed was also impacted by the heavy rains, which CHP believes contributed to the accident. The Chrysler driver has not been charged, and the CHP will provide more updates as things unfold.
