San Andreas authorities on Wednesday, February 19th, released the identity of the two people who died in the car collision on Highway 4, San Andreas, California. They are Jeffery Heffington, 60, and Sheila Heffington, 58.
The couple, who are from Chowchilla, passed away at the hospital where first responders took them for treatment. An autopsy report showed that they succumbed to the injuries they sustained from the accident.
The California Highway Patrol said that the couple was traveling west on Highway 4 east of Pool Station Road in a Toyota RAV 4 when the crash happened. They collided with a 2016 Lexus RX350 heading east at about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 15th.
The Lexus, driven by 20-year-old Haomiao Zhang, was overturned after the crash. The young man, together with his passengers, Ao Yang, 20, and Minhao Liang, 19, got severely injured.
The trio was taken to an area hospital for treatment, and they are still alive. The road got shut down for an hour after the collision as authorities examined the scene.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. So far, authorities have not cited Zhang for any impairment or negligence leading to the crash.
Vehicle collisions in California often lead to fatalities. Overspeeding and reckless driving are among the leading causes of car collisions, with drivers going 30 mph beyond the prescribed speed limit.
Teenage drivers also contribute to significant car crashes due to their inexperience on the road. Design effects, wrong-way driving, improper lane changes, and road rage are also factors that contribute.
