The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office on Wednesday, May 13, identified Jasmine Herrera and Jose Herrera as the victims of a collision on Downey Avenue. Accident reports state that the crash occurred on 91 Freeway, Bellflower, California.

The California Highway Patrol reported the crash at 12:09 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12. Jasmine, 15, was driving a 1998 Mercedes while her father, Jose, 44, was the passenger.

Reports said that she steered the vehicle to the right and veered off the roadway. This caused the car to go airborne before landing on Downey Avenue on a ramp below. The vehicle eventually rested on its left side, beside a pickup truck within a construction area.

Paramedics and responding officers arrived at the scene and attended to the victims. One of them died at the scene, while the other passed away while receiving treatment at the hospital. Police revealed that neither of the victims was wearing seat belts when the accident happened. Investigations into the cause of the crash remain ongoing.

Drivers and passengers must use seat belts when driving. Seat belts reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by road traffic accidents. The safety device also prevents vehicle occupants from getting ejected when a crash occurs.

Drivers must drive safely even when they use their seat belts. The latter doesn’t mean that motorists can drive recklessly, and they must never exceed speed limits when driving on roadways.

Accident reports show that speeding is a major cause of road accidents. Statistics also show that accident mortality rates increase when seatbelts are not used. Drivers must ensure that they drive safely and belt down, while also adhering to other traffic laws.
