Police responded to an accident call around 6am on Sunday morning. Arriving to scene, they found a collision between a Jeep SUV and semi truck.
Investigators have determined that the semi truck ran into the back of the Jeep SUV, which was occupied by a family of five. The impact of the collision pushed the Jeep beyond a fence that runs along this stretch of roadway – the jeep ultimately coming to rest on the vehicle’s side.
At this time, it is unclear what caused the accident. California Highway Patrol remained at the scene of the crash to piece together exactly what happened.
Two individuals in the jeep, a father and his two-year-old son were killed, and the other three were taken to Kern Medical to be treated for their injuries – two children (ages five and nine) and their mother.
The five-year-old suffered major burns and had to be transferred to USC Medical Hospital. The nine-year-old mas treated for moderate burns and the mother was also treated for burns to her hands.
The driver of the semi truck was not injured in the accident.
