On Monday, August 17th, the man who caused multiple accidents in North County, California, received a lengthy prison sentence. Michael Dorman, 30, would spend 30 years and four months in state prison for striking and injuring half-dozen pedestrians.
The accident happened in two places; first on December 4th, 2016, in San Marcos, and the second took place ten days later in Vista. Dorman pleaded guilty to six counts of attempted murder.
Facts from the accident report showed that in the first occurrence, the man struck a married couple in the parking lot of a Home Depot store. The second happened in various locations in Vista, and Dorman hit four pedestrians. North County Sheriff’s deputies arrested him on the same day in Oceanside after a 15-minute chase.
The deputies said that the then-suspect was driving under the influence and intentionally struck the pedestrians and other vehicles. County prosecutors did not disclose a motive for the offense, but Deputy District Attorney Christopher Campbell read impact statements from some of the victims at the sentencing hearing.
Campbell informed the court that the victims continue to suffer physically and mentally four years after the accident. Along with the physical pain, the victims said they felt anxiety and fear since the occurrence, especially when walking near vehicles.
A woman who Dorman struck along with her 17-year-old son said she had to learn to walk again and was in the hospital for months. She added that if the defendant wanted to hurt people, cause fear and pain, and possibly hurt himself in the process, he succeeded.
