New Details of Perris Crash that Killed a Bicyclist, Steve Baxter, Released

Linda Smythe

During the weekend, officials with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department revealed the details of the collision that claimed a man’s life in Perris, California. In a press release on Saturday, July 18th, the county coroner named Steve Baxter, a 66-year-old city resident as the fatal victim.

The sheriff’s officials said the accident report came in at about 11:16 p.m. on Friday, July 17th. They dispatched officers to the area near the intersection of Goetz Road and Ellis Avenue. When the deputies arrived at the scene, they found Baxter severely injured, and he succumbed to his wounds before the medics could convey him to the hospital.

The police have not uncovered the facts of the collision, but they revealed in the release that the victim was riding a bicycle when a car struck him. The driver of the vehicle left the scene before the first responders arrived. The investigators described the four-wheeled drive as a white or light-colored sedan with a shattered front windshield, and significant front-end damage.

The RCSD is actively trying to identify the car and the driver, and they asked the public for help. Anyone with information on the two should contact the sheriff’s office at the station or the listed line.

A driver who leaves the scene of an accident is liable for the offense of a hit-and-run under the California Vehicle Code. A guilty and convicted person faces imprisonment, and if there’s a civil lawsuit, payment of damages.
