PALM SPRINGS, CA – the Riverside County Coroner’s Office has identified 77-year-old James Scott of Grand Terrace as the person killed in Tuesday evening’s Palm Springs pedestrian accident.
Mr. Scott was crossing Sunrise Way on foot, near the intersection of Camino Parocela when he was struck by a motorist travelling southbound on Sunrise in a white Tesla SUV.
A woman who witnessed the collision attempted to aid the injured man and administered CPR to the injured man, but in the end, he did not survive his injuries.
Police responded to the emergency call at 7:10 p.m. and the area remained blocked off until 2 a.m. while police concluded their investigations.
The driver of the Tesla remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
Specific details about the accident are still unknown – such as, whether or not Tesla’s autopilot feature was engaged at the time of impact. The autopilot feature in Tesla vehicles has been at the center of several recent safety discussions. If the autopilot feature was in fact engaged at the time of the accident, responsibility for Mr. Scott’s death may lie with the auto manufacturer.
