The toddler killed in an auto-pedestrian crash in unincorporated Nuevo, near Perris, California, was identified on Saturday, July 25th. The updated car accident report released by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office named 2-year-old Samuel Rodriguez as the fatal victim.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the wreck that killed the toddler happened around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24th, in front of 28138 Lakeview Avenue near Nuevo Road. The Cal Fire-Riverside County Fire Department said that a car struck a pediatric pedestrian on Lakeview for unknown reasons.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the child with severe injuries. The coroner said that Rodriguez died at the scene about 45 minutes later. The CHP did not state if the driver involved remained at the crash site or fled after hitting Rodriguez. They will release more information as events unfold, and the investigation continues.

In California, the issue of pedestrian accidents covering different age groups is growing from bad to worse. Statistics from the Cal-Office of Traffic Safety show that between 2014 and 2018, there was a 26% increase in the auto-pedestrian collision rate, with about 893 people killed on the state’s roadways.

In 2018, more than 14 000 people sustained injuries, and nearly 7, 500 people died between 2009 and 2018. California’s pedestrian fatality rate is almost 25% higher than the national average, and no state in the US has more deaths from auto-pedestrian collisions than it. To reduce the number, OTS advises drivers and pedestrians to practice safe road behaviors and follow safety tips.
