A woman in Fresno, California, who was running from the police on Wednesday, March 4th, caused a two-vehicle collision that ended with a woman dying. The police identified the deceased as Debbie Criado.
A preliminary report by the police showed that they were trying to search a home in the 2000-block of East Ashcroft for a suspect connected with an armed robbery when they sighted a vehicle involved driving by.
The police tried to get the driver to pull over, but instead, the person drove away, causing them to give chase. As Fresno PD went after the driver, whom they later identified as Ruby Garcia, 28, she sped in and out of traffic.
The woman ran a red light just before she crashed into a vehicle between Princeton Avenue and Fresno Street at about 6 p.m. The car Garcia hit had four people inside, including Criado, who died on impact.
Two adults and a young boy of 6 in the car sustained severe injuries, and they were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Garcia was suspected by the police of driving under the influence and was arrested.
The FPD charged her with gross vehicular manslaughter and driving while under the influence of drugs and (or) alcohol. If convicted of the latter, Garcia faces between a year to four years in prison, a fine, and suspension of her driver’s license.
For gross vehicular manslaughter, the woman upon conviction gets four, six, or ten years in state prison. An investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
