Police: David Shelton Jr. Killed In Single-Vehicle Long Beach Crash

Authorities said a man died early Thursday when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a shopping center sign in Long Beach.

David Shelton Jr., 24, of Long Beach, died at the scene of the wreck, which occurred just after 2 a.m. Thursday on Bellflower Boulevard, police said. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Police said Shelton was driving on south on Bellflower Boulevard “at a high rate of speed” when he hit a dip in the road as he crossed East Seventh Street. Shelton lost control of his vehicle which slid into a fire hydrant and then a shopping center sign, according to a press release.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene, where Shelton was found unconscious. However, he died before he could be transported to a hospital for treatment, the release stated.

Investigators said Shelton’s vehicle left “over 225 feet of skid marks” before running into the fire hydrant.

“Shelton was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and it is unknown if alcohol, drugs or distracted driving was a factor in this crash,” Long Beach police wrote in the press release.
