The Redding Police Department has disclosed the identity of a man who died over the weekend after his bicycle crashed into a pavement in Redding, California. In a media release on Tuesday, June 16, the RPD divulged that 67-year-old Sean Patrick Ohara, of Redding, died from injuries suffered in a solo-bicycle crash. The incident may require the expertise of a bicycle accident attorney.
The mishap took place on Saturday evening, June 13, in the College View Drive area, just east of Bethel Church. RPD deployed officers to the location shortly after 6:30 p.m. after receiving several 911 calls of a man lying unconscious beside his bicycle after an apparent accident.
None of the callers admitted to having witnessed the crash, but evidence gathered on the scene showed that the man fell off the bicycle after it crashed into a curb. Investigators believe the victim was heading east on College View Drive on his bike when the crash happened. Prior to striking the curb, evidence indicated that Ohara lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the collision. The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, sustained critical injuries in the fall.
Emergency responders transported the elderly man to the Mercy Medical Center, where he eventually passed away from his injuries. Detectives are trying to determine if alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident.
The Redding Police Department used the incident to reiterate the importance of obeying all traffic laws and utilizing adequate protective gear while riding. The RPD is heading up an investigation into the accident.
A bicycle accident attorney representing the victim’s family can also conduct an independent investigation to ascertain the cause and liability of the accident. If the crash resulted from other factors outside the cyclist’s control, then there may be a need to pursue a lawsuit.
