Community Mourns Riverside Teenager, Roberto Garcia, Killed Crossing 91 Freeway

In a heart-rending accident, sixteen-year-old Roberto Garcia, a junior at Arlington High School, lost his life on the 91 Freeway near Tyler Street in Riverside on Monday evening, March 23, 2015, when he was hit by a 2013 Mercedes as he tried to cross the freeway on foot. The Mercedes, driven by John Martinez, age 23, was in the slow lane, traveling an estimated 65 to 78 mph at the time of the collision with the young pedestrian, who was crossing the freeway to get home.

FATAL INJURIES

Roberto Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 10:00 p.m., according to a report from the California Highway Patrol.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?

This dreadful, fatal motor vehicle accident with a pedestrian, resulting in the devastating loss of a young life, occurred when Roberto left a friend at the Galleria in Tyler and crossed the 91 Freeway to get to his home in the tract of housing on the eastbound side of the freeway. Witnesses say that Garcia first crossed the westbound lanes, jumped over the highway divider, and made it as far as the slow lane before being struck by the Martinez vehicle.

Reports are silent as to the exact speed the Mercedes was traveling in the slow lane, or whether speeding could have caused the pedestrian to misjudge the rate at which Martinez was approaching.

A REGRETTABLE LOSS

When a young person dies in an auto accident, a community cries out in mourning. Roberto’s family, his teachers, and his friends at Arlington High School have all suffered a terrible loss. On Tuesday, the high school provided crisis counseling services to students, to help the young understand and cope with a death that must seem to them unfair and wrongful. Our hearts go out to the many people who have been impacted by the death of this young person in such an unnecessary accident.
