A little before 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 20th, a traffic collision occurred on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, California. The California Highway Patrol said in the accident report that the occurrence led to the death of 34-year-old Kyle Davis of Sacramento. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the victim.
The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of State Highway 92. The highway patrol revealed that a BMW car was disabled in the slow lane of the westbound roadway.
A group of motorcyclists, including Davis, happened upon the vehicle and swerved to avoid it. However, the victim and one other motorcyclist were unable to dodge and ended up striking the BMW.
The impact ejected the man from his bike, and he landed in the San Francisco Bay. The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the occurrence and pulled Davis’ body from the water. The second motorcyclist and a passenger suffered severe injuries and received treatment at the Stanford Medical Center.
The CHP said that the driver of the BMW and a passenger left their vehicle behind and walked westbound on the bridge. There is no citation at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
When a car becomes disabled on the roadway, drivers should pull entirely off the road, as far right as possible, and turn on the hazard lights. Call 911 and give precise details of the breakdown location, if the insurance policy permits, call for roadside assistance, and if possible stay in the vehicle while waiting for help.
