A man was killed after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bicycle along Blosser Road in Santa Maria, California. The fatal collision took place at night on Friday, March 20.

Authorities confirmed the fatality, saying the accident took place on the west side of Blosser Road, near its intersection with Main Street at about 8:40 pm. Investigators gathered that the cyclist was pedalling his bicycle through the roadway when an approaching vehicle hit him from behind.

The force of the collision caused the driver to be knocked off his bike, landing about a hundred feet from the point of contact, while the bicycle was severely damaged. The operator of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident before law enforcement arrived, police said.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene a short time later and found the man sprawled on the Highway, south of Main Street, with multiple injuries.

The injured man was transported to the Marian Regional Medical Center, where he eventually succumbed to his wounds.

Authorities of the Santa Maria city identified the deceased bicycle rider as Ramon Maldonado, a 48-year-old local.

The identity of the hit-and-run motorist remains unclear. However, the suspect’s vehicle was reportedly a gray-coloured SUV or van with its front end possibly dented where it struck the victim.

The fatal crash is being investigated by the Santa Maria Police Department Traffic Unit as well as the Maria Police Department Crime lab to gather evidence that could lead to the arrest of the offending driver.
