Motor vehicle collisions occur for different reasons, and it can either be the fault of the driver or drivers involved or external influences. Common factors that cause accidents include speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, distracted driving, and running red lights or stop signs.

Adverse weather conditions like rain, snow, fog, adverse road conditions, wrong-way driving, tailgating, failing to yield, mechanical defect, or an underlying medical condition also cause accidents. Drivers can mitigate the factors by driving carefully, cautiously, and obeying traffic rules and regulations.
