On Monday, September 21st, the Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the 13-year-old male killed in a traffic collision near North Edwards, California. Updates made to the car accident report revealed the teenager’s name as Nasir Gordon.

The accident occured at about 1:35 p.m. on Sunday, September 6th, on State Route 58 at Claymine Road. Gordon was a passenger in a vehicle that lost control and overturned. He sustained significant injuries, and the medics took him to Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley, where he died around 4:12 p.m.

Motor vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of deaths in California and the United States. Collisions occur for several human-made reasons or external influences beyond the control of the person behind the wheel.

These factors can be mitigated if road users prioritize safety, obey traffic rules and regulations, drive with care and caution, and focus on the road ahead and around them. Drivers should avoid driving when impaired, wear a seatbelt, and maintain the legal or posted speed limit.

Before driving a car, carry out a safety check, and adjust all mirrors and seats before placing the key into the ignition. Expect other drivers to make mistakes, keep adequate space between vehicles, and scan the sides of the road every six to eight seconds.

After refueling, check to see there is no oil or fluid leakage, and check for noticeable leaks in the engine compartment. Use designated turn signals, exit signs, and if traveling a long distance, get adequate rest before getting on the road.
