An update to a car accident report from the Sacramento area of California revealed the identity of the woman killed in an accident. On Monday, May 8th, the California Highway Patrol named Thelma Soto Barrios, 30, of Rancho Cordova, as the victim.
The CHP’s initial crash report showed that the accident happened on Sunday, May 31st, around 2:25 a.m. on Highway 99 near 12th Avenue. A Kia was heading north on the highway when a Toyota Tundra driven by Edgar Mayorga of Sacramento struck it.
The impact of the collision caused the Kia to catch fire, and Barrios, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene from her injuries. The driver of the burnt car, who remains unidentified, suffered severe burn wounds, and the medics took the motorist to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.
Mayorga did not sustain any injury, and the CHP determined that he was under the influence at the time of the crash. The accident report showed that the investigators arrested the man on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. There is currently no additional information.
Vehicular manslaughter is a severe offense under California’s laws and defined as driving a vehicle in the commission of an unlawful act, not amounting to a felony, and with gross negligence. Gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated gets tried as a felony.
It carries a sentence of four, six, or ten years in state prison. The offender can also face an additional 3 to 6 years if any other victim suffered severe bodily harm.
