A man is facing charges following a police chase that ended in a crash in Victorville, California. According to the accident reports obtained from the Victorville Police Department, the incident played out on Wednesday, June 17.
The crash happened in a residential neighborhood on Forest Drive after the suspect led police officers in a chase that covered approximately 1.3 miles. Police said a vehicle driven by a transient, Thomas Villalobos, crashed into a parked car shortly after 11:00 a.m.
The incident kicked off when a Victorville police officer, Deputy S. Taylor, spotted the suspect driving a 2002 Nissan Altima on La Cubre Drive alongside a passenger. The driver was reportedly traveling along the curb line, near La Paz Drive, without the headlights on. The officer also observed that the license plate of the vehicle was two-years overdue.
This piqued the officer’s interest, prompting him to effect a traffic stop. Deputy Taylor said that Villalobos failed to pull over when prompted, but drove away at a high rate of speed. Officers immediately followed in pursuit through Victorville. Police reports confirmed that the suspect exceeded the speed limits during his flight, and violated several other traffic rules.
Villalobos continued into the Forest Drive neighborhood, where he struck a parked vehicle on the side of the street before crashing into a fence. The suspect then abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies eventually caught up with him, where he was hiding under a parked car. The accident reports affirmed that no one got harmed in the crash.
A registration check of the vehicle confirmed the license plate on the Nissan was, in fact, from another car. Investigators discovered that the motorist stole the Nissan Altima out of Victorville on June 4, 2020.
They took him to a hospital for a routine check-up, before booking him into the High Desert Detention Center. His charges include evading a peace officer with disregard for safety, possession of a stolen vehicle, and altering a vehicle registration. Jail records show that the man got released about fourteen hours after his arrest.
