A 69-year-old Inglewood man’s life ended Tuesday, March 17, in a deadly, multi-vehicle accident that occurred around 11 a.m. in Torrance. Driving a 2002 Cadillac sedan westward down 190th Street, the man’s vehicle meandered across the center line and into opposing traffic. Near Crenshaw Boulevard, he first hit a 2013 Toyota Prius taxi, kept going, and crashed head-on into a 2008 Honda minivan. The Honda then hit a 2014 Dodge Caravan that was stopped to make a left turn at Crenshaw.
FATALITY
The Cadillac driver was transported to a hospital, where he died. Three others were hospitalized for injuries from the collisions: The 57-year-old taxi driver, a taxi passenger, and 52-year-old woman in the Honda. Three others, including the Dodge driver and two passengers in the taxi, escaped the dangerous motor vehicle accident without serious injury.
CHAIN REACTION
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident but told reporters that the driver of the Cadillac may have driven into oncoming traffic while suffering a medical emergency. Police have not said whether the other drivers, acting with reasonable care, could have avoided the rapid-fire crash. Those injured could be entitled to money compensation for their personal injury. Without an independent investigation, one can never rule out other causes, as well, like some sort of mechanical failure with the Cadillac that could have caused the fatal crash, giving rise to manufacturer liability for a wrongful death claim.
The claims, counterclaims, and cross-claims in an auto accident involving several vehicles can involve several insurance companies and arguments about obscure concepts of causation and comparative fault. Insurance adjustors rely on the discouraging complexity of these situations to try to deny monetary compensation to those without legal help, who might otherwise be entitled to money damages for their injuries and losses.
