On January 8, 2020 authorities arrested Uber driver Amir Attia, 45, of Tustin, on suspicion of sexual assault.
In July 2018, Tustin police released a 25-year-old woman from their custody. She had been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The woman requested the Uber ride. Attia responded to the request. He began to drive the woman to her residence in Santa Ana. During the ride, Attia stopped his car and sexually assaulted her.
Santa Ana police confirmed this through DNA evidence over a year later. They arrested Attia, who confessed to the sexual assault. Police booked him into an Orange County jail on suspicion of sexual battery and digital penetration and set bail at $150,000.
Attia was a convicted felon from a sexual battery that took place in 1993, so Uber should never have employed him. Uber says they did not learn about Attia’s record until 2018, proving that they had not done a background check on the driver before that time.
The company claims they removed Attia’s access to the Uber app in 2018. Somehow, however, the man continued to drive for the rideshare company.
Uber and Lyft have been charged with thousands of sexual assault claims involving their drivers.
