When it comes to operating a motorcycle, a person needs a different skill set from driving a motor vehicle and needs to exercise more care and caution. However, the two have the same road and traffic rules. It is through regard for these rules, continuous education, and common sense that a motorcyclist can mitigate accidents and fatalities.

A person who desires to operate the two-wheeled drive must ensure that he or she completes the Basic Rider Course designed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol. The course is compulsory for new riders and those below the age of 21.

When riding, wear a helmet and safety apparel. The helmet must comply with the United States Department of Transportation guidelines and have a sticker affixed to it. It must fasten appropriately to the head, provide cover for the face and eyes, and allow air passage.

The apparel should consist of long pants, a long sleeve leather jacket or reflective material, ankle-length boots, and full-fingered gloves. Additionally, avoid lane splitting when riding, ride defensively, and stay awake and sober.
