Three people suffered injuries in a collision involving three vehicles in Willits, California. The incident took place on the morning of Tuesday, June 2, and calls for the intervention of a car injury lawyer.
The California Highway Patrol reported the tragic occurrence just after 7:20 a.m. on Highway 101. The traffic collision involved a 1999 Honda Civic and a cement truck plying the route at the time.
Investigators determined that the Honda, driven by 32-year-old Brenton Michels, a Kennewick, Washington resident, was heading south on the highway. At the same time, a Peterbilt cement truck was northbound on 101.
For reasons still under investigation, the southbound vehicle drifted into northbound traffic lanes as it approached the Willits Bypass. The move caused the wrong-way vehicle to collide head-on with the Peterbilt truck, driven by Wyatt Phillips, 25, of Ukiah.
As a result of the collision, Michels’ car veered sideways into the south lanes of travel before becoming disabled, blocking off southbound traffic. The truck, however, overturned onto its side, spilling off several bags of cement, and a spare tire it was hauling.
The stray tire from the truck rolled into southbound lanes and struck a third car, a Subaru Legacy operated by a 52-year-old resident of Humboldt County. The Subaru had reportedly parked on the side of the Bypass after the initial collision blocked off traffic.
Michels sustained multiple severe injuries, and a helicopter flew him to a trauma center in Santa Rosa. He was later arrested on suspicion of DUI and conveyed to another facility in Sacramento.
Phillips and a 25-year-old passenger in the Subaru suffered moderate injuries in the accident. Paramedics transported them to Adventist Health Howard Memorial Hospital for treatment.
