The Kennedy Expressway was shut down following a fatal accident that occurred between an SUV and a semitrailer truck on westbound I-90 just east of River Road about 6:10 a.m. this morning.
The SUV driver, identified as Rufino Sanchez, was rear-ended by the semitrailer truck, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and strike a town car that had been slowing down in front of his SUV. The town car then struck the concrete barrier, injuring both the driver and a passenger. Both were rushed to Chicago’s Resurrection Hospital, where they were found to be in stable condition and were released this afternoon. Tragically, Sanchez was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.
The Indiana resident driving the semitrailer truck was cited by police for failure to reduce his speed to avoid a crash. The Kennedy Expressway was shut down for the much of the morning as rescue crews responded to the accident and police officers conducted their investigation of the scene.
