Authorities have released the name of the motorcyclist killed Friday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on a state highway near Salisbury.
Brian Barry, 51, of Lowell, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after the crash, which occurred at about 4:15 p.m. Friday, according to the Massachusetts State Police. Two other vehicles were involved in the wreck, but car accident reports do not list any other injuries.
Troopers said Lowell was driving a motorcycle north on Massachusetts 495 at about 4:15 p.m. Friday when he pulled over onto the highway’s shoulder near the junction with Massachusetts 95 in Salisbury. A driver in the highway’s left lane applied the brakes when she observed Barry, believing he was about to merge into traffic, according to car accident reports.
The driver of a pickup truck traveling behind the second vehicle swerved in an attempt to avoid a crash, but he struck Barry’s parked motorcycle, troopers said. Car accident reports state that Barry was thrown over a guardrail.
Barry was transported by Med Flight to Beth Israel Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, the state agency reported.
The driver of the first vehicle, identified in car accident reports as a 62-year-old Douglas woman, and the truck, identified as a 77-year-old man from Turner, Maine, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
The incident remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police. No charges or citations connected to the wreck have been announced by authorities.
