Police: Mark Sweeney Hospitalized, Arrested After Tewksbury Crash

Authorities said a Lowell man hospitalized briefly following a crash Monday in Tewksbury that knocked out power to hundreds of area residents has been arrested.

Mark Sweeney, 47, was arrested on charges of fourth-offense operating under the influence, driving with a suspended license and reckless operation of a vehicle, as well as a citation for a marked lines violation, Tewksbury police said.

Authorities at 5:30 p.m. Monday were called to area of Woburn Street near Highland Avenue to investigation a single-vehicle wreck. First responders found a pickup truck lying on its side next to a damaged utility pole, police said.

Police said Sweeney, the truck’s driver, was taken to an area hospital and was treated and released. He then was arrested on multiple charges.

According to a press release from National Grid, the crash pushed two lines together, which “resulted in the potential for increased voltage in the area of Woburn and Felker Street.” A total of 215 customers in Lowell and another 81 in Tewksbury were affected.

National Grid crews said they were able to repair the infrastructure damage, but additional steps had to be taken before power could be restored. Utility workers had to go “house-to-house to assess damage to meters, meter sockets and customer electrical equipment to confirm” that power could be restored safely, according to the release.
