Tyriek Brown Arrested For Lowell Crash That Killed Jose, Fernanda Medina

Authorities said the driver who fatally struck a married couple Thursday evening in Lowell was drag-racing at the time of the incident.

The crash claimed the lives of Jose Medina, 66, and Fernanda Medina, 62, of Lowell, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. Tyriek Brown, 26, of Everett, was arrested Thursday on multiple charges in connection to the incident.

Brown will need the services of a car injury attorney as he is arraigned and tried in Lowell District Court.

Authorities said Brown was racing another vehicle on Pawtucket Boulevard at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday when he lost control of his car. The sedan went over the curb and onto the sidewalk, where it struck Jose and Fernanda Medina, who were walking in the area, police said.

Both Medinas were transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. However, both succumbed to their wounds, according to authorities.

Brown also was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening, investigators reported. He was arrested and charged with motor vehicle homicide and manslaughter, authorities said.

Court records show Brown was arraigned Friday. It is unclear whether he has yet retained the services of a car injury attorney to represent him going forward.

The incident remains under investigation, though police said speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash. The other driver alleged to have been racing Brown when the wreck occurred fled the scene and has not been identified.
