Jordan Mejares, 7, of Corpus Christi, Texas, says that a bully’s deliberate actions caused the loss of his fingertip. Gloria Hicks Elementary School’s assistant principal is calling it an accident.
Mejares said he was trying to open the restroom door when an older boy kicked it shut on his finger and laughed at the boy. Mejares’ mother, Krystal Gluth, said that the school nurse corroborated her son’s account.
However, when Gluth later spoke to the assistant principal, he claimed that the older boy was in fact kicking the door open, to help Mejares. That explanation makes no sense to Gluth. If that were the case, she said, the door wouldn’t have slammed shut onto her son’s finger.
Unfortunately, doctors could not reattach Jordan Mejares’ finger. It is possible for a fingertip to grow back, if the injury did not occur past the fingernail. This process could take 7-10 weeks, and still result in a mild deformity.
Hicks Elementary sent a letter to parents saying that they are investigating the allegations of bullying. However, a local group is voicing concerns about how Corpus Christi Independent School District handles parent complaints. The group, “Stop Bullying in CCISD” has asked parents to speak out during a CCISD’s board meeting on Monday, February 10.
