A Washington police chief who crashed his squad vehicle into a building last week has been released from the hospital, though the medical condition that caused him to lose consciousness while behind the wheel remains a mystery, authorities said.
In a press release issued Monday, City of Tenino officials wrote that Police Chief Bob Swain is recovering at home after the April 8 crash in which he suffered minor injuries. That crash remains under investigation by the Washington State Patrol.
Car accident reports state Swain suffered a “medical emergency” at about 4 p.m. Wednesday that caused him to crash into Scotty B’s restaurant. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
“While his injuries due to the accident are relatively minor, the underlying condition that precipitated the loss of consciousness remains unexplained,” Tenino officials wrote in the press release.
City of Tenino officials have hired Jon Stines, the former chief of police in Tumwater, to lead the city’s police department in an interim capacity.
“Bob is as well as expected,” Tenino Clerk/Treasurer John Millard said in the release. “He’s a realist. He’s been in his line of work for 40 years and is very clear-eyed about it. He understands the process has to play itself out and any talk about how soon he’s coming back and whether the return will be in a full or limited capacity is pure speculation at this point.”
Bob Swain, who was hired to lead the police department in July 2018, told city officials that doctors still are running tests to get to the bottom of his health issues. Car accident reports do not state whether investigators believe other factors might have contributed to the crash.
