Nicholas R. Smith

Nicholas R. Smith of St. Helens, Oregon, almost killed himself when he fell asleep while driving in Franklin County, Washington. According to the accident reports, the event occurred on Saturday, May 16.

Reports from the Washington State Patrol stated that the accident happened at around 11 a.m. south of the town of Connell. The Oregon resident was driving north on US 395 when he lost control of his vehicle due to drowsiness. The vehicle at first drifted off the road and struck another car that was heading northbound.

Undeterred, the vehicle continued until it went off the roadway and headed for an embankment. It then finally came to a rest when it crashed headfirst into a gully. Police reports indicate that the driver, Nicholas R. Smith, 40, survived the crash because his car’s airbag absorbed the shock.

The Washington State Patrol responded to the scene and accessed the situation. They issued the sleeping driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, a citation for negligent driving. On-scene emergency health personnel transported Smith to the nearest hospital for treatment of his injuries.

According to accident reports, a number of accidents are caused by drivers sleeping behind the wheel. Therefore, the authorities always advise that driving should be done by mentally alert persons.
