A Spokane County Sheriff’s Department deputy struck a motorcyclist Tuesday morning while pursuing another vehicle, according to authorities.
The motorcyclist, who was not identified in car accident reports, was injured in the crash, which occurred at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in Spokane, authorities said. No other injuries were reported, but the driver of the suspect vehicle, Levi M. Everitt, 28, was arrested on multiple charges, as was his passenger, Jacob L. Gier, 26.
A deputy attempted to pull over Everitt’s vehicle near Fifth Avenue and Park Road in Spokane Valley at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said. However, Everitt sped off, embarking on an “aggressive, reckless determined attempt to avoid capture,” deputies wrote in car accident reports.
As the pursuit continued, Everitt apparently rammed into a squad vehicle deliberately, authorities said. Spike strips were deployed to flatten his tires, but he continued “to demonstrate his determination to flee at any cost, despite sparks flying up from the metal of wheels grinding on the roadway,” deputies wrote in car accident reports.
As a deputy was preparing to use a PIT maneuver to stop Everitt’s vehicle, a deputy struck a motorcyclist who “failed to clear the intersection as the emergency vehicles approached,” authorities said. The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital for treatment of a possible broken leg, according to car accident reports.
Everitt and Gier were taken into custody. Gier allegedly told authorities that he asked Everitt to stop several times so he could get out of the vehicle, but Everitt refused.
Gier was arrested on an outstanding warrant, as well as a new charge of possession of heroin. Everitt was arrested on charges of attempting to elude a police vehicle, second-degree assault, vehicular assault, reckless driving, driving while suspended and unlawful imprisonment.
Deputies also said the motorcyclist showed signs of impairment. A blood sample was taken at the hospital and a charge of driving under the influence is pending, authorities said.
