Lyft Driver Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident


A Lyft driver attempting to help a sick passenger on Saturday was killed after being hit by a car in San Diego.

41-year-old Henry Reyes of Escondido was a driver for the popular ride sharing service, Lyft. On Saturday night, Mr. Reyes was transporting three passengers east on State Route 94, east of downtown San Diego. As the group traveled, one of the three passengers began to vomit inside the vehicle.

Reyes pulled his Kia SUV to the shoulder of the road and exited hi vehicle to help the sick passenger. As he did so, a Toyota sedan entering the freeway at the 25th Street on-ramp ran into the back of the parked SUV. The Toyota then rolled down a nearby embankment where it came to rest.

The driver of the Toyota, 24-year-old Steven Quintero, his passenger and a dog then got out of their vehicle and fled on foot. The men were found a short time later with the aid of SDPD’s helicopter and were taken into custody. The 23-year-old passenger was released, while the diver was booked on charges of felony drunken driving and hit and run.

Alexandra LaManna, a spokesperson for Lyft commented “We were heartbroken to learn of the tragic hit-and-run accident that took the life of a Lyft driver. Our deepest condolences are with the victim’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
