A news report from Tuesday, June 16th, disclosed that a nursing home in Bridgeview, Illinois, is facing a second negligence lawsuit for the death of a patient from COVID-19. The family of Sally Urbaniak, 76, are the plaintiffs and Bridgeview Health Care Center of 8100 S. Harlem Avenue, is the defendant.
The family is accusing the care facility of violating the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act by failing to isolate the victim from other residents showing symptoms of COVID-19. The court document showed that Urbaniak’s relatives believe that the nursing home placed profit above the health and safety of their patients by failing to take preventive measures.
The complaint disclosed that the victim on March 27th reported to her caregivers that she didn’t feel well. The woman had a dry and unproductive cough, and shortness of breath, which are symptoms of the virus. Her condition worsened, progressing to pneumonia, which the staff treated with antibiotics.
On April 10th, the nursing home staff took the victim to OSF-Little Company of Mary Medical Center, where she remained until her death on April 15th. Urbaniak’s family claim that since her death, BHCC has not returned their calls or their relative’s belongings, including family heirlooms.
The plaintiffs also claimed that the nursing home has a history of negligent behavior and has failed several state health inspections for regulation violations. The family wants the court to grant them a jury trial, and damages in excess of $50,000.
